The Lost Symbol Audible – Abridged dged
Author: Dan Brown ID: B002P9T8C0

The Lost Symbol, the stunning follow-up to The Da Vinci Code, is a masterstroke of storytelling – a deadly race through a real-world labyrinth of codes and unseen truths…all under the watchful eye of a terrifying villain. Set within the unseen tunnels and temples of Washington, D.C., The Lost Symbol accelerates through a startling landscape toward an unthinkable finale.Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon is summoned to deliver an evening lecture in the U.S. Capitol. Within minutes of his arrival, the night takes a bizarre turn. A disturbing object – artfully encoded with five ancient symbols – is discovered in the Capitol Building. The object is an ancient invitation, meant to usher its recipient into a long-lost world of hidden esoteric wisdom. And when Langdon’s mentor Peter Solomon – prominent Mason and philanthropist – is kidnapped, Langdon’s only hope of saving Peter is to accept this invitation and follow wherever it leads him. Langdon finds himself plunged into a clandestine world of Masonic secrets, hidden history, and never-before-seen locations…all of which seem to be dragging him toward a single, inconceivable truth. The Lost Symbol is exactly what Dan Brown’s fans have been waiting for…his most thrilling novel yet.

I want to be fair to Dan Brown.

Elitist literary critics say that Brown is not a good writer, and that his stories are bland. I personally think that if you manage to genuinely entertain and awe your audiences, then you have accomplished something worthy of reading. I also think that "The Da Vinci Code" was nearly an impossible act to follow. People will have all sorts of crazy expectations for your next book that you won’t be able to fulfill. As such, I write this review as fair as I can, trying to assess it on its own merits, but comparisons are inevitable.

The Lost Symbol isn’t a bad book, but it is a letdown. I didn’t like this one for the same reason I didn’t like Angels and Demons as much. Also, Brown doesn’t advance the story at a good pace. A good two-thirds of the book (I’m not exaggerating, I counted the pages) was filled with variations on such a scene:

Character A: Have you heard of X?
Character B (usually Langdon): Yes, but I thought that was just a myth.
Character A shows or tells B something.
Character B reacts with shock.
Then, insert scenes of people walking from one place to another, being chased.
Then, insert the sentence "Suddenly everything made sense." At least for the next ten pages.
Repeat.

After reading this, I had to wonder whether Brown is a writer on Lost, where people can’t seem to give straight answers, and where scenes never resolve any questions.

Here’s my advice to Dan Brown:

1. Fire your editor. There were some whole passages, even chapters, that served no purpose other than to inflate your book to an unnecessary size. I don’t mind reading big books, but I do mind reading through unnecessary words. Ch. 69, for example, is unnecessary.
A quick note on the ranking: I hold 5-star ratings in reserve for the best of the best. The previous Robert Langdon books I would rate at about 4 stars for being fun reads but nothing that would resemble a literary masterpiece. I enjoyed this book significantly less than the other two, hence the two stars.

‘The Lost Symbol’ is not a bad book. While it would certainly rank it 3rd amongst the three Robert Langdon novels it is still an amusing read. I forgive Brown for his weak writing style and I accept that he writes characters that are fairly two-dimensional with little personality outside of that which pertains explicitly to the story. I accept that this novel was going to have the exact same story structure and characters as the previous two. I accept that the relationships between people will be odd. I accept that most chapters will end with a variation on his cheap cliffhanger "And then Robert couldn’t believe what he saw!" I accept all that. And yet, even with all those concessions, this one just left me flat.

When it comes to the writing style I’m not entirely sure if I should be blaming Brown or his editor (or, potentially, his lack thereof-which I guess would be blaming him). The style, while simple, could easily be smoothed out with an editor who was given some room to work. What hurts his prose is repetition of words and phrases over and over and over and over-often on the same page.

Sure, the story structure is an identical match to the first two with all the same types of characters and twists. But here’s the issue, this time is just doesn’t work like it did before. Here’s why:

1. Robert Langdon is officially a moron: He spends more time being lectured to and making wrong guesses than he does solving anything.
Have to agree with many of the posters here. Too many cliched characters: the diminutive Japanese CIA lady straight out of "The Incredibles"; the tatooed protagonist just the albino from DVC in reverse; the evil Turkish prison guard from "Midnight Express," the wise religious man who sees with his hands…I could go on and on. Forget the so-called science. You can see the plot twists coming a mile away. Is there ANYONE who didn’t know the true identity of the villain immediately? Or the location where it would all end? Or what was inside the box Langdon was given? But I think when it got to the "drowning" scene, I lost it completely. I simply could not believe he would re-create a scene from a 20-year-old movie.

What hasn’t been mentioned here is the absolute idiocy of the characters’ behavior. A brilliant scientist lets a stranger into her secret lab because she receives a TEXT message? Who wouldn’t question that? By her own admission, her brother didn’t even know how to text! The use of phone messages throughout is maddening. A major CIA director hears someone saying, "I’ll be there in 20 minutes" and never questions that he might be lying? Langdon flies off at a moment’s notice without any confirmation that the person he’s speaking to represents the person he says he does? And SURE, I’ll bring along this sacred thing that I’ve been told to keep hidden for years just because you say so! DB keeps using this same device over and over and it simply defies all sense. "Oh, well, this person says he’s my brother’s doctor–my brother who’s been MISSING–so, sure, I’ll just run right over there and have a chat with him." In a private home that looks nothing like a doctor’s office. "Sure, I’ll have some tea!

Loving Someone With Borderline Personality Disorder: How to Keep Out-of-control Emotions from Destroying Your Relationship Audio CD – Audiobook, MP3 Audio, Unabridged
Author: Shari Y., Ph.D. Manning ID: 1494569981

Review

“More than many other disorders, BPD affects relationships. This book offers families and friends invaluable skills for helping both their loved one and themselves. Dr. Manning has done a beautiful job. A ‘must read.'”–Perry D. Hoffman, PhD, President, National Education Alliance for Borderline Personality Disorder

“Try out the recommendations this book gives you. You will be surprised by how much better your relationships become.”–from the Foreword by Marsha M. Linehan, PhD, Director, Behavioral Research and Training Clinics, University of Washington

“The title says it all! Dr. Manning explains what she has learned about the true nature of BPD from the experts themselves–those who have the disorder. She shows family and friends how our instinctive responses to the crises associated with BPD are frequently ineffective or even harmful, and illuminates what we can do differently, providing practical, incisive, step-by-step guidance. We highly recommend this book.”–Jim and Diane Hall, parents of an adult child with BPD and Family Educators for the National Alliance on Mental Illness and the National Education Alliance for Borderline Personality Disorder

“An extremely useful and highly readable guide….Manning paints vivid portraits of how an encounter with someone with this affliction might go….It has offered me, as a therapist, plenty of ideas….[An] aid to understanding and humanizing a complex condition.”

(Human Givens 2011-07-01)

“This hopeful yet realistic book is an indispensable tool for managing relationships with persons who have borderline personality disorder. Research based, clearly written, and practical, this guide to a complex disorder is highly recommended.”

(Library Journal 2011-07-01)

“Manning’s own background equips her well to provide this self-help resource. Manning trained in DBT under Marsha Linehan and has accumulated a wealth of experience working clinically with people with BPD. She makes frequent reference to DBT throughout the book, but her major achievement is to translate DBT principles and methods into practical steps and advice that are accessible to a lay person….The techniques of mindfulness, awareness of emotional triggers, validation and others can be usefully integrated into many areas of clinical practice, especially for clinicians advising supporters of people with BPD….A clearly written and accessible guide that deserves to be widely read, and which should be available to lay members of the public and to health professionals.”

If you are a trained therapist, the basic tactic in this book may work easier for you. It takes a lot of practice and patience to use the tools and advice given. The gist I get from it is to take the emotion from your response to the BPD out of the equation and also offer your understanding in a confirming statement. They give a few examples of the types of thing’s they mean, and what is and isn’t a confirming statement. This does help keep interactions and communication’s from escalating to high intensity, in many cases, but it is very hard to do when the boyfriend I love is either emotionally very high or very low and he is trying to get an emotional response from me. I have been able to use this advice over the last 3 months and it has helped. We’ve been able to have less heated fights and get to more understanding of each other, I feel. The more calm and stable I remain, the more he remains so too … but I have to contain myself first and always. I have to rethink and reword most of the immediate thing’s I’d like to say to him, which helps him from not going off the deep end, but I feel he does not get the seriousness of the situation at times. Also giving a confirming statement as to validating him, I feel as an addict that he is, makes it seem that I am condoning his actions or words, so he continues to do destructive behaviors. Maybe I’m not doing it quiet right or I’m expecting to much.
Over all the book is helpful, and there are no quick solutions … it’s all work, hard work when loving a BPD.

Ok, so I have only read 1/3 of this book so far, and I will come back and write another review after finishing, but if you love someone who has BPD then you definitely need to read this. My husband has been incorrectly diagnosed with bi-polar disorder, adhd, severe depression, etc. However the 20+ pills he takes everyday have never seemed to help or they just comatose him. We have been together ten exhausting years, with many moments of extreme behavior and many moments of the wonderful person he can be. I have often thought that not only was he crazy, but also mean, manipulative, and a free loader b/c he has never been able to hold down a stable job. I’ve often accused him of wanting to be with me so I could take care of him financially. After reading the short amount of this book that I have, so many things make perfect sense. It has been very eye opening and is a must read for anyone who has a loved one with borderline personality disorder. At the very least it will help you to realize your loved one does love you but has not developed the necessary skills to be a functioning member of society (to various degrees). It will also allow you to change your reaction to their actions, which can help them change. This book is already such a blessing to me, and I am so thankful that Dr. Manning has taken the time to educate those of us who just happen to love someone with this disorder.

I have also read "Stop Walking On Eggshells". I like the approach of this book much better. Eggshells seems confrontational, but the approach of this book is trying to foster an understanding and helping the person you love.

Hope to Die Audible – Unabridged ridged
Author: James Patterson ID: B00MP2348G

Detective Alex Cross is being stalked by a psychotic genius, forced to play the deadliest game of his career. Cross’ family – his loving wife Bree, the wise and lively Nana Mama, and his precious children – have been ripped away. Terrified and desperate, Cross must give this mad man what he wants if he has any chance of saving the most important people in his life. The stakes have never been higher: What will Cross sacrifice to save the ones he loves? Widely praised by the greatest crime and thriller writers of our time, Cross My Heart set a jaw-dropping story in motion. Hope to Die propels Alex Cross’ greatest challenge to its astonishing finish, proving why Jeffery Deaver says “nobody does it better” than James Patterson.

This is the 22nd Alex Cross novel by James Patterson and I must say it is an absolute joy to read. The first part of the story forms a well-written rehash of the traumatic but gripping events from book one that transpired concerning the Cross Family as well as simultaneously revealing new information concerning the killer/s. The reader will find that every new drop adds tension and depth to the story. As is by now almost trademarked by Mr Patterson, every chapter ends with a clever hook which makes it virtually impossible to stop reading. But why would you anyway? Just about half of the world’s population are Alex Cross fans and of course they want to find out what has happened to the fictional family the world have grown to love like no other.

So read on, and learn the truth. None of the book is pretty. The victims are horrifically maimed and abused and the serial killer is leading our hero a merry little psychological dance as he leads him toward madness, depravity and a search for vengeance. The world knows Alex Cross much better than the bad guy does so we know without turning a single page that the forces of good will overcome this particular personification of evil. But the "fun" is in the reading, just like every worthwhile book you pick up. And HOPE TO DIE is no different from that perspective. From an entertainment factor, however, it stands head and shoulders above most of its specific genre. And, dare I say it, head and shoulders with the best of the Alex Cross novels themselves.
After a numbing fall to the depths of disappointment with Cross My Heart (Alex Cross), the 21st installment in the Alex Cross series, bestselling author James Patterson returns with his most famous character in a sizzling sequel which will restore the confidence of the faithful in his skill as a master-storyteller, and earn him many more new fans. With his reputation as the world’s most popular thriller writer at stake, Hope to Die is a high-risk gamble which will either bury the fiasco that was Cross My Heart (Alex Cross) or put the final nail in the coffin of a legendary fictional character, Alex Cross.

Which way will the scale swing?

Simply put, James Patterson seems totally unfazed by the rampant criticism with which Cross My Heart (Alex Cross) was received. This is apparent as the story continues in the same vein and in the same JP trademark short chapters. Patterson really surprised me by entering enemy territory with Marcus Sunday and his true-crime book The Perfect Criminal hogging the limelight in the introductory chapters. As the story progresses he captures in vivid details, though blurred at times by the necessity of the plot, the fate that befell the Cross family in Cross My Heart (Alex Cross).
So how many books does an author get to write before editors ignore their work and just put it out there? Obviously, James Patterson hit that number a long time ago.

I have read all of the Alex Cross books. I used to read the Women’s Murder Club books until they became writing by formula. I refuse to read the books co-authored by him after the first one, they are terrible. Now I ask myself, am I going to give up on Alex Cross?

Hope to Die is the continuation of Cross My Heart, which was atrocious. There are so many holes in this story that it should have been called, No Hope, Dead. Besides the flaws in police procedure, the under-played reaction of Cross to his situation and the total predictability of the story, there are too many facts that are just wrong. An example, Patterson describes Cross as "six feet two inches with a thirty inch reach". I am only five feet eleven inches and I have a thirty five inch reach without stepping up on my toes.

So as not to reveal anything that might spoil the book for anyone who has not read it, I am going to stick to the flaws in the editing that make this a terrible read.

Patterson begins one chapter by describing "three birches that grew close together". Hello, that is how birches are, planted three together, which everyone already knows. In that same chapter he says, "the dog went to the stove and lay down by the stove". I didn’t think he went to the stove and lay down by the TV! In one chapter he tells us the alias used by the antagonist has shown up seven times in a internet search, a few chapters later he tells us this again.

The Age of Sustainable Development – March 3, 2015 Pdf Download

The Age of Sustainable Development Paperback – March 3, 2015
Author: Visit ‘s Jeffrey D. Sachs Page ID: 0231173156

Review

Jeff Sachs’s admirable book explains what sustainable development means, why it matters, and our history in relation to our environment. It shows how the pattern of growth we have followed has placed intense strains on our planet and generated severe risks to our lives and livelihoods. Above all, it explains clearly where we can go and how to get there. It describes a potential future of great attraction in terms of wellbeing, community and prosperity, properly understood. It should, and I hope it will, strengthen both the understanding of the great choices we face and the resolve to act. It is a splendid achievement.

(Lord Nicholas Stern, Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment)

This terrific book stands out for its breadth, clarity, mastery of detail, honest discussion of complex matters, and its author’s practical experience and good sense. It is actually ten terrific books under one cover because its accounts of economics, history, health, development, education, gender issues, food, climate change and biological diversity are among the best available. If you want to understand the modern world, and if you have room on your shelf for only one book, this is your book.

(Jared Diamond, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Guns, Germs, and Steel)

There are very few authors that can so effectively rally the masses around an important cause–one that in this case concerns our collective future. There are still too few leaders with knowledge about global sustainable development challenges to affect the scalable changes that are needed.

Professor Sachs’s book is a comprehensive summary of complex issues, but it breaks them down and makes them digestible and understandable while making the imperative clear. It will clearly contribute significantly in closing the gap between science and policy, and hopefully serve as a catalyst for action.

(Hans Vestberg, CEO, Ericsson)

A comprehensive and incisive overview of some of the biggest challenges facing the world today and further confirmation, if it were needed, that Sachs remains one of the most astute and authoritative observers of the age of sustainable development.

(Paul Polman, CEO, Unilever)

As the concept of sustainable development comes of age, Jeffrey Sachs takes us on a journey from the intellectual and normative origins to the science of complexity which define today’s development choices. A compelling and often personal and engaged narrative, The Age of Sustainable Development reads like a “looking glass” through which to glimpse the future–a future still characterised by more questions than answers as to how 9 billion will–together–govern the sustainable development of our planet.

(Under-Secretary-General Achim Steiner of the United Nations, Executive Director, United Nations Environment Programme)

In this era marked by geopolitical and ecological crises, unspeakable structural violence and unprecedented inequality, on the one hand, and breathtaking advances in science and technology and untold opportunities, on the other, a new narrative for social, economic and environmental justice is urgently needed. Prof. Sachs, distinguished thinker, commentator and activist, charts a clear and compelling path, both moral and scientific, which cuts neatly through the increIDg complexity and interdependence to the realization of a holistic vision of sustainable development. A very timely handbook to inform and empower all those who have a stake in the post-2015 debate on the future of our planet.

(Michel Sidibé, Executive Director, UNAIDS)

The Age of Sustainable Development is my candidate for most important book in current circulation. Inspirational, encyclopedic in coverage, moving smoothly from discipline to discipline as though composed by multiple experts, the book explains why humanity must attain sustainability as its highest priority–and outlines the best ways to do it.

(Edward O. Wilson, University Research Professor Emeritus, Harvard University)

An important, comprehensive and remarkably accessible book–a standout in a sea ofjargon-laden titles that fail to explain and vivify this enormously complex topic

(Kirkus Reviews (starred review))

Sweeping, enlightening, affecting, and invaluable, The Age of Sustainable Development should be available to everyone and consulted repeatedly.

(Booklist (starred review))

…clear straightforward prose and a wealth of statistics…Sachs balances alarming forecasts with signs of progress…

(Publishers Weekly)

It is truly gratifying that an economist as distinguished as Jeffrey Sachs has authored The Age of Sustainable Development. His vast knowledge in the field and deep insights on various sectors of economic activity make him uniquely qualified to provide a view of the subject. Given the fact that almost a quartercentury has gone by since the Rio Summit of 1992, it is time for an authoritative volume such as the one Professor Sachs has authored for the benefit of global society.

(Dr. Rajendra K. Pachauri, director-general, TERI; former chairman, IPCC)

Comprehensive and crystal clear–what we need to make sustainable development a reality, not a dream.

(James E. Hansen, director, Earth Institute Program in Climate Science, Awareness, and Solutions)

The Age of Sustainable Development is both sobering and inspiring: sobering because it presents in great detail the unprecedented challenges facing mankind; inspiring because it assures us that we can meet those challenges, if only we summon the will to act.

(Kerry Kennedy, president, RFK Center for Justice and Human Rights)

It is, in my view, the best, most comprehensive and most articulate exposition of sustainable development ever written…. I would make this book compulsory reading for all politicians and business leaders.

(David Griggs Nature)

Sachs has probably produced the best book to date on how to manage the planet for 10 billion people.

(Fred Pearce New Scientist)

A comprehensive introduction to the field of sustainable development by one of its leading scholars, advocates, and practitioners…. Recommended.

(Library Journal)

In a book of incredible breadth, Sachs delivers a sobering account of the impact of human activity upon the balance of life on Earth…. Highly recommended.

(Choice)

An inspiring and enlightening read.

(Africa Report)

a perceptive, analytical, and hopeful book about the future…This landmark in economic publications presents a brilliant examination of major worldwide threats to the planet and puts forward ways to balance economic development and environmental sustainability to overcome those threats…It is a magnum opus; the chief source of information for any person interested in understanding what sustainable development is all about.

(Bill Schwab Missourian)

A thoughtful and comprehensive resource on this crucial topic.

(Civil Engineering)

A clear and cogent nontechnical survey of the world’s major challenges beyond the preservation of peace and security.

(Richard N. Cooper Foreign Affairs)

Sachs’s book is written for a popular audience and could be used as a complementary text for courses in environmental or development economics or in public health classes or environmental studies classes. Its breadth of insights and coverage is staggering and students and general readers will find new ideas on every page of the book.

(Matthew E. Kahn Journal of Economic Literature)

There is a wealth of information including probably over 100 charts and illustrations in this book. For many people, this and the accompanying text will make the book worth having. However, if you are going to write a 543 page book and promise some significant conclusions about important subjects, you need to do better than this book. This is more like a textbook that labors to cover all of the issues in a scholarly way but never really comes up with any new or useful ideas or solutions to the important problems of the world. Sachs is assuming his name and reputation will sell this book and convince people to go to the trouble of reading it and recommending it to others. There are better books:

I’ve had this book now for several months and I seriously pick it up at least once or twice a day. Yes, I am a professional aromatherapist and a registered nurse, but neither of these are necessary or required to find this huge book of information helpful and necessary. You absolutely DO NOT have to be even well versed in essential oils to NEED this book. If you use any essential oil for any reason – you need this book. If you don’t understand some of the chemical constituent information, then take time to learn it – it isn’t difficult and the author makes it really very easy. Is it an absolute necessity for anyone who sells, uses or advocates the use of essential oils – YES!! It is easily segmented into even just a particular essential oil and you can quickly see if there are cautions for pregnancy or any other health issue. It astounds me that so much research, documentation and time had to go into accumulating all of this information and the price of the book is very under priced in my opinion when I consider so many of the healthcare texts and college texts that give a smidgen of the information in this one book. Yes, it is big and yes it is heavy and yes it is worth every single cent you might spend on it.

Robert Tisserand is THE single most respected authority for so many things pertaining to aromatherapy and essential oils but particularly when it is a question of safety. He has been studying, researching and writing about this subject for very many years. This book sits beside my desk – and I have many aromatherapy books that aren’t in this revered spot – so I can easily reach over and check, double check everything whether I am making up a blend, writing a blog, commenting on a social media site or just curious – the answers are always (yes, always) there and easily found. He has given the world of aromatherapy what no one else could – legitimacy and safety. I for one will be forever grateful.

If you had the first edition of this book, you are going to LOVE the second edition. If don’t have the first edition of this book, you are going to LOVE this edition. I almost hate to call it a second edition…it’s a complete rewrite with far more information than the first. It’s a heavy tome, full of detailed information including individual oils, their uses, contraindications, etc. Every page has something useful on it and this has already become a go to resource for me in my aromatherapy practice.

This book is ESSENTIAL for everyone wanting to learn about the safety of essential oils. Profiles for hundreds of essential oils, as well as hundreds of constituents, you will learn science-based safety information. Essential for the practitioner, but also good for those new to essential oils, as you can look up maximum dermal % for topical applications so you and your family will stay safe. You won’t be sorry you have this tremendous resource at your fingertips! I keep mine right on my desk for frequent referencing.

Bridesmaids meets The In-Laws in a novel told from the alternating perspectives of two women who define the term frenemies – from New York Times best-selling author Jen Lancaster. Jacqueline Jordan knows conflict. A fearless journalist, she’s spent the past decade embedded in the world’s hot spots, writing about the fall of nations and the rise of despots. But if you were to inquire about who topped Jack’s enemy list, she’d not hesitate to answer: Kitty Carricoe. Kitty reigns supreme over the world of carpools and minivans. A SAHM, she spends her days caring for her dentist husband and three towheaded children, running the PTA, and hiding vegetables in deceptively delicious packed lunches. Kitty and Jack haven’t a single thing in common – except for Sarabeth Chandler, their mutual bestie. Sarabeth and Jack can be tomboys with the best of them, while Sarabeth can get her girly-girl on with Kitty. In fact the three of them were college friends until the notorious frat party incident, when Jack accidentally hooked up with Kitty’s boyfriend…. Yet both women drop everything and rush to Sarabeth’s side when they get the call that her fabulously wealthy husband has perished in a suspicious plane crash. To solve the mystery surrounding his death, Jack and Kitty must bury the hatchet and hit the road for a trip that just may bring them together – if it doesn’t kill them first.
Done.

Jacqueline "Jack" Jordan and Kitty Carricoe had the potential once to be best friends. Roommates in College they were opposites, but they seemed to balance one another out in the ways that mattered. When Kitty told Jack something that was hard for her to hear, and even harder for her to admit to, their friendship disinigrated into a series of petty pranks designed to hurt the other person as much as possible. Now adults, Jack and Kitty couldn’t be more opposite. Kitty is the loving wife to a dentist and the mother to three children, and Jack is a journalist at the front line of danger. The only thing that they have in common is their friendship with Sarabeth Chandler, and she is the only person who can bring them together.

The two women are forced together when they receive word that Sarabeth’s husband Trip has perished in a horrible plane crash. Both Jack and Kitty find the crash suspicious, especially now that the news has broken that Trip has "lost" billions of dollars. Kitty and Jack reluctantly embark on a bizarre road trip that will either save the day or kill them both.

I’m a huge Jen Lancaster fangirl and I eagerly read everything that she writes. I have to say, though, that The Best of Enemies was my favourite fictional release of hers to date! Her memoirs have a chatty, fun, hilarious vibe but with her last two fictional releases I felt that Lancaster was finding her fictional author’s voice. I’m happy to say that she has definitely found it! Lancaster’s fictional writing voice has sharpened and matured and The Best of Enemies was an enjoyable, fast-paced read!

I enjoyed the character development the most. When we begin reading the book we are given an initial impression of both Kitty and Jack.

American Medical Association Handbook of First Aid and Emergency Care – May 5, 2009

American Medical Association Handbook of First Aid and Emergency Care Paperback – May 5, 2009
Author: American Medical Association ID: 1400007127

From Library Journal

This much-needed revision of the AMA’s Handbook (LJ 10/1/80) ranks as one of the best in a plethora of first-aid guides. The previous edition’s introductory essays on general procedures have been retained, but this edition has added sections on such things as the Heimlich maneuver. The main section, alphabetically arranged entries on injuries and diseases, is in the same format as the previous edition; each entry includes background information, a “what to do” list, symptoms, continued care, and immediate treatment. A new section on sports injuries has been added as Part 3. Although designed for home use (with fill-in charts for emergency phone numbers and family member medical history), this book has a place on the shelf of any medical reference collection.

Part I of this book includes planning for emergencies. Topics covered are safeguarding your home against accidents, what to tell medical personnel when an emergency situation occurrs and medical charts to fill out for family members.
Emergency procedures, i.e., CPR and the Heimlach Maneuver, are highlighted with red on the edge of the book for quick reference.
Other areas covered are recognizing medical problems, snake and insect bites and sports injuries.
This is a great book to keep with a First Aid Kit.

Very informative and up to date information. I learned a lot more in this book than in taking a first aid class. Illustrations are used when needed to explain how to perform a technique. It is a good tool to have if you want to be prepared for an emergency situation or even if you want to know how to dress a minor wound.

This book is great for when little Jimmy scrapes his knee. This book is great when you have a medical professional 5 minutes away. If you are looking for survival/emergency guide this is not it.
